Links are a brilliant way for Small Businesses to direct traffic from their Social Media to their website and I strongly recommend that whatever your Business is, whether Beauty, Holistic or any other Business, that you all give it a go.
I am bowled over every time by the reaction I get from clients when I show them what links can do to help them showcase special offers, new products, customer advice or any other specific message on their Social Media.
It’s a bit like a light bulb moment when the penny drops and they see how easy it is to get their followers to hop over from Twitter or Facebook or any other platform (apart from Instagram where only 1 link is allowed and that is in your bio), onto their own website.
Links really are a great way to get your followers clicking on your own website and better still, you can direct them exactly where on your website you want them to be.
Links are like directional signs and work really well If you target the message you are putting out on Social Media. So, use a visual to grab attention and add in your targeted message along with a link to the section of your website where you show more detail about your message. You can help your followers cut their search for your helpful content and you can direct them exactly where they want to be, which is also where you want them to be. It becomes a win win situation.
The shortness and neatness of a link makes it an easy click, especially when you haven’t got space to write very much, as is usual on Twitter.
So, if you are talking about your most recent blog for example but don’t have the space to cut and paste the whole thing then put in a smart little link to take your followers straight there.
Links can also really help with SEO by using keywords for your business that search engines will pick up on. If you post new content regularly using a link to your blog, with your keywords then this will also boost your SEO.
The mechanics of using linkshare websites are very straightforward. For example, I use bit.ly www.bitly.com. If you go on this site and cut and paste the url from the piece you want shortened and made into a link, bit.ly will immediately shorten it for you to use. You then just copy and paste, it really is that easy to do.
If you sign up to an account at Bit.ly (it’s free), they provide a facility to share your links directly on Facebook and Twitter and they monitor how many clicks you are getting on each link. You can see how many people have clicked through to your website each day and their location so you can monitor how each link is working for you.
Using an account has some other fab features, such as customizing your links, filtering them by status, tags and other more complicated features. You can even purchase a domain specifically for your links. Something else I have found really useful is that Bit.ly have a support desk if you have any questions.
If any of you Small Businesses out there are using links but are not really sure what you are doing with them, or if you aren’t using them and want some advice then do get in touch or leave me a comment or a question below.
